Huge and impressive sand dunes, such as those of the Erg Chebbi in the Sahara are probably what most people think of when you mention desert. They are not always part of a desert scene of course, but even without the sand dunes, there is something very intriguing and evocative about deserts.

The Kalahari Desert covers a massive area and largely consists of grasslands and acacia forests. The San Bushmen are the traditional inhabitants of the desert, and there is also a significant amount of game.

Jordan has some spectacular desert scenery, such as at Wadi Rum and Wadi Araba. Wadi Rum is famed for its link with Lawrence of Arabia. A wadi is a dried river bed, and Wadi Rum is about 1 mile wide. It is a great desert experience and good for hikers and climbers.

This is where you can see the huge Saharan sand dunes. The Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is the place to go for this.
Alternatively, if you visit the Zagora region of Morocco, the desert is less dramatic and more scrubby. There are dunes, such as at Tinfou, but they are very small in comparison with Erg Chebbi.

The desert on and near the coastline of Peru is extensive and quite barren. However there are places of interest here, including the incredible Nazca Lines.

The Kalahari Desert can be visited in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park links South Africa with Botswana, and this is a massive reserve which is very well worth a visit.
