Atlas Mountains

This is a mountain region

The Atlas Mountains are in northwest Africa covering Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The two highest peaks are in Morocco - Mount Toubkal and Mount M'Goun.

In Morocco, the mountains are divided into additional the Middle, High and Anti-Atlas Mountains. It is the High Atlas Mountains which are more regularly visited by travellers.

High Atlas Mountains
Mount Toubkal in Morocco’s High Atlas is the highest mountain in Morocco at 4167m. The valleys below the mountain are fertile regions growing various different crops and walnut trees, and are home to many Berber communities. Travellers coming to this region mostly come to take advantage of the excellent trekking, whether they are intent on a summit attempt of Toubkal itself, or simply to enjoy hikes in the lower reaches and valleys.

Imlil and Aremd : Imlil (1740m) is the gateway to the High Atlas region, and is about 1½ hours drive from Marrakech. There are a few hostels and shops here, but it remains a small village. From Imlil it is about a 30-40 minute walk to the village of Aremd. If you are arriving with luggage, this will be carried by mule for you.
There is very little in the way of facilities in this village, but it is a thriving community where many of the inhabitants earn their livelihood from guiding or portering for trekkers. The village has been helped by tourism, as money has come from tourism initiatives (including being backed by Tribes), and been matched by the community, to provide water, electricity and other benefits in recent times.
