Island Bush Camp is a small, personalised camp to the far south of the park in a little visited area. It used to be ON the island but river errosion over recent years means that the camp has retreated to the 'mainland' side but is still opposite the island hence still known as 'Island' Bush Camp! It sits on the side of the Luangwa River inside the park and is the only camp for a huge distance, therefore offering a remote experience with plenty of wildlife. There is a vehicle in camp but the emphasis is on walking though the vehicle picks guests up in the afternoon for night drives. The park covers 9,050 square kilometres and is home to some 60 species of mammals and 420 species of birds.
The Island Bush Camp offers rustic accommodation in 4 double grass and reed huts. The huts are raised and each one has a private verandah overlooking the Luangwa River. All are en-suite and have open-air bathrooms with hot showers, running water and flush toilets. Guests can enjoy candle-lit dinners in the open under the stars.
The camp's remote location, far away from any other camps, means that guests have exclusive access to this game-rich area. The camp offers walking safaris, led by a qualified guide and accompanied by an armed National Park scout. The Luangwa Valley is one of the few places in Africa where it is possible to walk amongst wildlife in true wilderness. During the walking safaris the guide will explain the little details of the bush, spoor, vegetation and the ecology, giving guests a true insight into the wildlife of this region. Access by boat to other areas of the park is also enjoyed here. Currently (2010) guests are usually driven through the park interior south through 'Bush Camp Company' territory and cross the river at the southern point to the Island Bush Camp. This means that a long, enjoyable game viewing trip with a picnic can be taken on the way.
