Bushara Island Camp is located some 9kms from Kabale on a private island on Lake Bunyonyi. The camp is set on 16 hectares of private land with accommodation in a mixture of safari tents with concrete floors and thatched roofs and brick cottages. All have views over the lake. Each tent has a private bathing facility and all cottages have ensuite bathrooms. The restaurant is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has views of the lake, hills and distant volcanoes and serves both local and international cuisine.
Activities offered include swimming, sailing, canoeing, nature walks around the island and bird watching. There are also badminton and volleyball courts for the energetic.
The rooms consist of some 'safari tents' which have a queen bed or 2 singles and sleep one to four guests. The 'dove' and 'pitta' cottages are thatched with grass and good for couples or small families, each having a queen size bed and a single with private patios looking over the lake. Then 'Kingfisher' is the camp's largest cottage for families with 2 beedrooms, a living area and private patio and can sleep 4-6. The 'Whydah Treehouse' is a wooden cottage and has 2 double beds and a single and sits of stilts on a steep hill with a bird's eye view over the water.
Bushara Island Camp is a sustainable eco-tourism camp which raises awareness and promotes protection of the environment. Profits from the camp help local communities around the lake through activities like orphan care, income generation projects, agro-forestry, small livestock distribution, scholarships, craft co-ops, swimming instruction, and HIV/AIDS education.
The large dining room has comfy lounge sofas and a fire for cooler days and the home cooked food includes Ugandan specialities as well as the usual pizzas, snacks, curries and the local delicacy in various forms - crayfish!
