Wildlife & Chumbe

From the open savannah of Tanzania's Serengeti, to the volcanic enclosure of the Ngorongoro Crater, the huge views over Lake Manyara, and the wilderness around the beautiful Lake Eyasi, this African safari will bring you the best in wildlife viewing in northern Tanzania, as well as introducing you to the local people whose lives are inextricably bound to this land. After your safari, you can relax on the beach on the stunning, award-winning island of Chumbe, off Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. This trip is a real treat.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1:
    Arrive Kilimanjaro airport. Your Tanzanian safari begins straight away, as you transfer to Kirurumu Tented Lodge overlooking Lake Manyara. Late morning ethnobiological walk with a Maasai guide. (L,D)
  2. Day 2:
    Day's game viewing in Lake Manyara National Park (with picnic lunch). Overnight at Kirurumu Tented Lodge (FB)
  3. Day 3:
    Drive to Lake Eyasi, a huge soda lake, with picnic lunch. Overnight Kisima Lodge on the edge of the lake. (FB)
  4. Day 4:
    Hike into the Ngogongoro Conservation area, passing Hadzabe and Datoga dwellings. Then up the Eyasi Rift towards the highlands. Some parts are steep, but give great views of Eyasi. At the top, near Mt Makarot, you are transferred by jeep to your private adventure camp. An optional Maasai boma visit is possible. (FB)
  5. Day 5:
    Drive to Olduvai Gorge to see the museum, then on to the Serengeti for game viewing. Private adventure camp. (FB)
  6. Day 6:
    Day game drives in the Serengeti. Adventure camp. (FB)
  7. Day 7:
    Drive to the Ngorongoro Crater. Afternoon game drive. Serena or Sopa Lodge. (FB)
  8. Day 8:
    Drive to Arusha in time for flight to Zanzibar. Short transfer and boat ride to Chumbe Island. (B,D)
  9. Days 9-10:
    Relaxing at Chumbe. Chumbe is a tiny island south of Zanzibar. There are just 7 bungalows here, so this is an exclusive, quiet and relaxing retreat. The accommodation is spacious and the setting spectacular. Every bungalow overlooks the Indian Ocean and is set back a little from the water's edge. With no distractions such as TVs or newspapers you are sure to enjoy the slow pace of life and tranquil location to the full. Swim or snorkel in the ocean, take a walk along the beach, watch the dhows sailing by from your bungalow or explore the nearby forest reserve. (FB)
  10. Day 11:
    Depart Chumbe to mainland Zanzibar to connect with your flight on to Dar es Salaam or other onward arrangements. (B)

Is it for you?

This is an easy holiday, other than Day 4 which includes quite a steep hike (an alternative hike can be arranged).

Best times to go

This African safari and beach holiday in Tanzania can be taken all year round, though to make the most of the beach you are best to avoid the rainy seasons and Chumbe closes mid April - mid June.
