Selous Safari Camp

Located on the banks of the Rufiji River in Selous Game Reserve, Selous Safari Camp has 9 large luxurious ensuite tents on raised wooden platforms with double beds and solar powered fans and lighting. Selous Safari Camp is designed to blend in with the spectacular natural scenery in what is one of the most photogenic areas of the Selous Game Reserve. There are no fences and no artificial modifications to the natural fauna and animals wander freely through the camp.  Selous Safari Camp has a sitting, dining area, and swimming pool, and provides a very personal and intimate safari experience.  Each tent has two verandahs, plus a 6ft wide double bed, with bedside tables & lamps.  The ensuite bathrooms have double brass basins, cupboard space and a dressing area and the adjoining shower area is open to the skies. Laundry services are available.

The Selous Game Reserve has been declared a World Heritage Site, one of three in Tanzania. The camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique riverine and lake complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. The sheer diversity of the landscape - from hot volcanic springs, placid lagoons and the many channels from the Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers which bisect the reserve - makes the Selous a unique area in which to observe the full panoply of African wildlife. Most of Africa’s mammal species, from the largest to the smallest to the rarest, thrive here. In addition there are some 440 species of birds and more than 2,000 recorded varieties of plants. While our guests find that game viewing and communing with nature can readily be achieved without moving from the camp itself, we offer full opportunities to get out into the bush to explore more of the Selous Game Reserve, its intriguing topography, its fascinating flora and its teeming wildlife.

Open four-wheeled drive vehicles, specially adapted for close-up game viewing, make for exhilarating early morning and evening forays into the surrounding bush. Expert are guides on hand to explain everything from unusual animal behaviour to rare and elusive species of birds and even the life cycle of termites.

On the Rufiji River and its many tributaries, channels and lagoons, Selous Safari Camp offers game viewing by boat, an opportunity for guests to obtain close-up photographs and views of the many hippo wallowing in the water and the large crocodiles lurking on the banks. The wealth of the Selous reserve's vivid bird life is best seen from the boat.
