Hemingway's Camp, located in Tanzania but adjacent to Kenya's Amboseli in an exclusive 120km sq. area of private wilderness, is ideal for those who want an African safari where you get out of the vehicle and experience pristine African bush.
Hemingway's camp is set in under the spreading branches of Acacia tortillis near a volcanic cone which affords superb sundowners, and views all the way to Kilimanjaro’s summit are excellent.
The camp works in partnership with Olmolog Maasai community who act as guides and hosts, giving guests the opportunity to meet the Maasai in their homeland and make a contribution to this community tourism initiative.
Resident game –including elephant, lesser kudu, giraffe, eland, Grant’s gazelle and gerenek - is very good. The main draws of Kilimanjaro’s majestic peaks, four different vegetations zones, unusual and rarely seen dry habitat animals, and the freedom to walk, night game drive, contribute to conservation in a fragile wilderness and see Maasai in their natural surroundings make this a must visit for the discerning traveller. Guests can enjoy superb bush walks lasting from a few hours to a few days, and fly camping away from camp can be arranged.
Accommodation in the six to eight tents (depending on time of year) is luxuriously comfortable and spacious, and each has ensuite shower and toilet facilities. The tents are fully and tastefully furnished, with wooden beds with 6” mattresses, safari chairs, tables etc. In addition, this completely private camp has a locally furnished dining tent for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a campfire area.
Hemingway's Camp is about two hours drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport and one hour from West Kilimanjaro airstrip (for charters). It makes an ideal start or end to a northern circuit African safari, and with easy charter options can be combined with many other places too.
Fair Trade / Responsible Travel
The Maasai who provide guiding (and donkeys on treks) are given fair wages for their services. Specific boma visits are arranged at extra cost. The local safari company that will be hosting you rent this land from the village and the price of this trip includes a per person bed night fee which goes directly to the village. It is planned that this tourism initiative will also help with funds for other projects such as a better road and school.
In 2005, The Tribes Foundation donated enough money to build two classrooms and two teachers houses at the local village (called Olmolog).
