Adventure Camping

Adventure camping uses dome tents and usually private camp sites, so you are the only people in the camp site, there are no facilities permanently located there - your camp crew take in and out all the food, equipment and supplies - leaving only footprints.  Some campsites are in the national parks but many are in the concession areas bordering parks and private tribal lands, which means the local communities benefit from you staying there and often walking safaris are the main activities, these camps being in remote and beautiful areas.

As we book your holidays on a tailor made basis, you will have your own vehicle and guide and depending of the number of people in your group, the cook and camp staff and equipment may travel with you but more likely they will have a supply vehicle and go ahead and set up the camps while you and the guide game drive at a leisurely pace.  Itineraries are totally flexible to suit you and adventure camping can be combined with lodges if you like.

These sturdy tents are 2.3m x 2.3m and insect-proof with verandahs. For triples a larger 3m x 3m version is used. Each person sleeps on a frame stretcher bed with a 3” foam mattress. Pillows and sleeping bags are provided to fit the conditions each one with its own liner bag. Outside each tent is a wash stand and hurricane lamp at night. A fresh bath and face towel are provided once every three nights of camping. 1 toilet and 1 shower tent are provided per 7 guests. The shower has a 15 litre bag with a valve handle and shower head and a wooden frame to stand on. The toilet is a sturdy metal frame wooden seat placed over a hole dug by the staff. Inside the tent is a pile of earth and a trowel. In some places there is little or no water available for many miles so hot showers cannot always be offered but this will be notified in your safari itinerary in advance and in places where there is no shower water, hot water will be provided in wash stands. There is a dining tent with removable walls, depending on the weather and meals are eaten at a table with large lightweight chairs with backs and arm rests and at night the tables are lit by candlelight.

Viewpoints

This is a great way to really enjoy wild Africa, sleeping under canvas with no light or noise pollution (well, only animal noises!). You get to stay in beautiful areas and this type of accommodation is particularly good for enjoying the off the beaten track walking trails and remote areas.
