    About Tanzania

    • Close Panel

A Tanzania safari holiday, time to relax on the spice island of Zanzibar, or perhaps a Kilimanjaro climb .... Tanzania really does have a great deal to offer whether you want to chill out, be challenged, or take an exciting wildlife safari.

Tanzania, in the heart of East Africa, is home to some of the most concentrated populations of wildlife in Africa. As a safari destination, Tanzania is world-famous for locations such as the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. This is where the great migrations take place, and tens of thousands of plains animals can be seen on the move. A Tanzania safari can be one of the most exciting wildlife experiences you can have.  There is resident wildlife here throughout the year. In the remote parks on the edge of Lake Tanganyika, there are thriving populations of chimpanzees and it is a very special experience to see these animals in the wild.

Southern Tanzania offers a more remote and untouched wildlife safari experience with much quieter, smaller lodges and less visitors but the same amazing variety of wildlife and scenery.  In the Selous, boat safaris are a popular option.  Ruaha National Park is one of the most scenically stunning and ecologically diverse locations for wildlife and for a unique combination of 'bush and beach' for the only National Park on the coast, try Saadani on the Indian Ocean.

As well as wildlife watching you can climb Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, or visit the place known as the "cradle of mankind", Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys unearthed the secrets of man's early evolutionary heritage. Tribes works closely with native peoples such as the Maasai and Iraqw, and offer a number of Tanzania safaris and treks where the Maasai guide you through their lands, giving you another fascinating dimension to your safari in Tanzania.

And of course there is Zanzibar - the legendary "Spice Island" in the Indian Ocean, as well as several lesser known islands like Chumbe and Mafia, where you can relax on white coral beaches.   Add a magical stay on one of these islands after your Tanzania safari, and you have the perfect holiday.

As a rough guideline, a two week safari and beach holiday to Tanzania will cost in the region of £3000 - £3500 person plus flights.

    Pricing guidelines for Tanzania

    • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Tanzania can combine easily with other East African countries.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.

Kiswahili and English are Tanzania's official languages. Although most people in the cities and towns speak some English, a few phrases of Kiswahili are useful in more rural areas.

    Visas

Most nationalities require a Tanzania visa, obtainable from the High Commission in London (or on arrival into International Airport.

    Health

This is a malarial country. You also need a yellow fever certificate.

    Best times to go

Tanzania's dry seasons are from about end December to mid-March and June to October. Wildlife viewing tends to be best at these times, though see specific advice for different reserves.

    Getting there

Flights from UK to Tanzania take about 9 hours direct or 10-11 with a brief stopover en route if from Europe.
