Known particularly for its famous prison inmate, Nelson Mandela, Robben Island is now one of South Africa’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The barren island is 12 km off the coast of Cape Town, and for about 400 years it was used as a prison island, as well as a military base.
You can visit the cell where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many of his years in captivity. The standard tour takes 3½ hours, inc. a half hour ferry ride each way. On the boat you are likely to see Cape Fur seals, dolphins and many sea birds.
