The Royal Hotel in Pilgrim's Rest is perhaps one of South Africa's best-known hotels. This national monument is famous for its atmosphere and world-class service and facilities. Composed of 10 authentic buildings dating back to the latter part of the 19th century, the hotel offers charming en-suite bedrooms. Declared a goldfield in 1873, Pilgrim's Rest became a cosmopolitan centre of activity in South Africa. Today it stands as a legacy to these pioneers and was proclaimed a National Monument in 1986.
The hotel reflects the hospitality and elegance typical of the late Victorian era. The reception walls are lined with the most interesting photographs and artefacts providing vivid glimpses of Pilgrim's Rest's history. This theme is continued in the lounge and famous public bar. The restaurant is informal and serves hearty old-fashioned meals in a historical atmosphere in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Enjoying a meal outside while taking in the scenery, is an experience worthwhile. The Royal Hotel has 50 en-suite bedrooms spread over a number of annexes to the main hotel. Rooms are furnished with genuine antique brass beds, wash stands, Victorian baths, wardrobes and other furniture to reflect the history of the building.
Whilst in Pilgrim's Rest, guests can soak up the atmosphere of the town, visit the museums and shops and go gold-digging and stake a claim and maybe strike it lucky! Other activities include golf at the 9-hole golf course, horse-riding, hiking and trout fishing.
