Inkaterra Machu Picchu

Inkaterra Machu Picchu is an ecological hotel, located amidst a private 12-acre area of cloud forest at 2020 metres above sea level, along the Urubamba River on the edge of Aguas Calientes. The train station and Machu Picchu bus stops are just a few minutes walk away.

The 85 room hotel (60 superior rooms, 20 junior suites and 5 suites) is built out of stone, adobe, stucco and eucalyptus beams. Stone pathways lead through lush cloud forest to the rooms in one or two storey white-washed cottages. Some rooms overlook the gardens, whilst others face the Urubamba River. All rooms have a large bathroom, sitting area, electric heater and extra long beds with fine cotton sheets, alpaca blankets and hand made coverlets. Rooms also include aromatherapy products, bath robes and Andean sandals. Six connected rooms are available for families, and family services include children’s menus, cribs, high chairs and baby sitting services (on request for an additional charge). There are two restaurants, a lounge bar and the Unu Spa which offers body massages, foot aromatherapy and an Andean sauna. The bar, boutique and reception all display authentic Andean artefacts and fabrics.

Construction has also recently finished on an exclusive private villa which comprises of 2 or 3 adjoining guest suites. Each suite has its own sitting area, fireplace and bathroom. There is a 24 hour butler service, and private dining. The villa has its own gardens with 2 heated plunge pools, and canopied day beds on the terrace. Each suite also as a plasma screen cable TV, DVD player, iPod with stereo speakers and cordless phone.

The hotel offers an extensive educational and recreational program with many guided activities on offer designed to meet a variety of interests and preferences. The hotel grounds contain more than 3 miles of ecological paths where guests can enjoy the nativce envionment. There are daily guided walks to learn about the ecology of the cloud forest, an Orchid Trail walk to see some of the 372 orchid species (best time for blooms November to March), morning and evening bird watching walks to look for some of the 180 species including 16 hummingbird species, and a twilight walk focusing on Andean spirituality. The Orchid Trail walk and bird watching can also be arranged on a private basis. Short visits can also be arranged to visit the ‘Tea House’ where the hotel’s organic tea is processed, and there are nightly illustrated talks by the hotel’s resident naturalist, or visiting researchers, about the flora and fauna of Machu Picchu.

Viewpoints

Inkaterra Machu Picchu is the perfect location to spend a relaxing, peaceful night after an exhilarating exploration of Machu Picchu. The hotel’s setting amongst the exuberant vegetation of the cloud forest is spectacular, and the hotel activities make an interesting alternative for those not wishing to have a second visit to the ruins.
