Luwawa Forest Lodge is located on the Viphya Plateau 10km east of the main road between Kasungu and Mzuzu.
Formerly a Forestry Department property, it has been a rest house cum lodge for many years now and has a row of cottage rooms which sleep up to 4 people dormitory style in the main garden area, some more rooms (some en-suite) in the main house and a private self contained house and adjoining annex, also self contained in a quiet corner of the gardens.
There is a large lounge area with a big open fire which is most welcome in the cooler winter months. The climate up here is generally quite fresh compared to the lower lying lake shores and southern highlands of Malawi.
Activities offered here include mountain biking and walking trails which stretch from the plateau down the escarpment to Chintheche on Lake Malawi. Horse riding can be arranged from the lake as well but this is only usually as part of a longer stay where camp outs can be arranged joining Luwawa to the lakeshore. The lodge has large gardens leading to a dam and surrounded by forrestry plantations and areas of indigenous woodlands. The plantlife and birding in this area is excellent.
