Malealea Lodge

A lovely lodge in a scenic location in Western Lesotho. The lodge has a history dating back to the early 1900s when Europeans discovered this area on horse back.

The lodge has cosy en-suite rondavel rooms and dining facilities. There are huts with or without linen and the pony trekking using basic huts with cooking facilities.

Day trips from here include a visit to a local school, during term time, 3 classrooms were built from donations from lodge guests. You can visit a local museum in a traditional hut and enjoy a cup of herbal tea while a local Basotho tells you about traditions and history. Trips to a local Sangoma (witch doctor) are possible and there are bush man paintings in the area. There is a village walk and a 'plant a tree' project nearby.

The pony trekking from Malealea can be tailor made to suit your needs, length of treks range from 1 hour to 6 days.

These Outings range from 1 hour to six days or longer: tailor-made to your requirements. The treks are usually about 7 hours each day. No riding experience is necessary. The huts and horses are hired from the Basotho people in remote areas. They are very basic and are equipped with a gas cooker, cooking and eating utensils, mattresses on the floor. The trails traverse spectacular mountain passes and some of Lesotho's highest waterfalls exploring Bushman paintings and experiencing "Basotho culture". Basotho Guides and a packhorse accompany the treks.
