Richard's Camp
Back
Richard’s Camp is situated on the edge of a small forest, where elephant and plains animals are regular visitors to the camp's perimeter and bird-life abounds. Richard’s Camp is small, private and exclusive seasonal camp owned and operated by Richard Roberts and was originally built as the Roberts’ family home whilst they carried out conservation work in the Masai Mara.
Richard’s Camp is situated in a conservation area north west of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. It is s traditional tented camp in true African safari style set within riverine forest and short grass plains of the Mara. Each of the seven spacious custom-designed tents are individually decorated and feature an en suite flush loo and heated shower. A solar system provides clean, silent power and ensures 24-hour light to all the tents.
As the weather almost always permits, meals are eaten under Kenyan skies, delicious three-course meals under an awe-inspiring canopy of stars. For any rainy or chilly evenings, dining can be inside, adjacent to the beautiful and cosy sitting room with its roaring fire. At the end of the day, guests can even indulge in an open-air Victorian bath tucked away in the forest, surrounded by flickering candles and the sounds of the bush.
Since Richard’s is a small camp, guests can design their days to suit their tastes - as exciting or relaxing as they please. There is a variety of activities from which to choose - escorted bush walks, day and night game drives, sundowners, full days out with delicious picnic lunches into the very heart of the Masai Mara and cultural visits to Maasai villages. Balloon safaris and day trips to Lake Victoria can also be arranged at an extra cost.
Game viewing here centres on the game rich plains surrounding the camp, which support a whole host of grazing animals including substantial herds of elephant, giraffe and assorted gazelles. Nearby woodlands also provide shelter for the resident pride of lions as well as other big cats. The nearby rhino sanctuary provides a small group of white rhinos with a secure environment through 24-hour guards while also providing an opportunity to come face to face with these magnificent creatures.
Fair Trade / Responsible Travel:
Richard’s Camp is situated in an area owned and managed by the Maasai people themselves under the name of The Ol Choro Oirouwa Wildlife Management and Conservation Association. A portion of every client’s per night fee is put back into the community and local projects. The camp employs three local guides.

Viewpoints
Richard’s Camp provides guests with tents of understated luxury in beautiful woodland setting. I thought the lounge area was really homely making guests feel truly at home while still being pampered.
