Kichwa Tembo

Kichwa Tembo is located in the north-western corner of the Masai Mara –the richest game park in Kenya. Kichwa Tembo is flanked by the Oloololo Escarpment and lies deep in a monkey-rich forest on the exclusive western side of the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Each of Kichwa Tembo’s spacious, en suite tents is completely private, tucked away in its own little piece of wild Africa. The camp is set among the forests just below the spot where ‘Out of Africa’ was filmed. Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp has 40 canvas safari tents, each with a private outdoor deck with sweeping views of the greatest grassland system on earth. There is an en suite bathroom with shower, stone floors and soft lighting.

The airy main restaurant is covered with Maasai thatch grass and is shaded by tall fig and ebony trees. Dinner may be served alfresco-style outdoors, weather-permitting. Private meals are also arranged on request. The courtyard is candlelit in the evening and offering a relaxing area in addition to the bar/lounge area. The camp also boasts a palm-fringed swimming pool, which overlooks the plains of the Mara. At night, askaris (Maasai warrior security guards) accompany guests to and from their tents.

The position of Kichwa Tembo affords the opportunity for walks along the Mara River and up the Oloololo Escarpment. Rangers and resident Maasai naturalists guide bush walks as well as conducting daily lectures. Guests can also visit a Maasai cultural village and watch traditional Maasai dancing.

There are a number of exciting activities available, like viewing game from a hot-air balloon, one of the finest wildlife experiences. Such a trip provides a unique perspective of the Mara grasslands and its wildlife. Sundowners at a location featuring spectacular views across the Mara allow guests to wind down after another action-packed African day. From this unique vantage point, the entire Masai Mara reserve is visible on a clear day. Fascinating night explorations traverse the private concession adjacent to the reserve in search of predators and other nocturnal animals. Guests may request the sole use of a Land Rover for game viewing.

Highlights

  • Uninterupted views out over the Masai Mara plains offering stunning game viewing from the comfort of your tent verandah.
  • A wide range of bush walks - along the Mara river and up the Rift Valley escarpment.
  • Relax in this shady camp also offering a swimming pool with a view.

Viewpoints

Kichwa Tembo is a surprisingly understated camp which gives panoramic views of the Mara plains from the comfort of your tent deck. Being a larger camp allows a wider range of activities to be provided for guests.
