Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake in Kenya's Rift Valley, north of Nakuru, near to Lake Bogoria which can be easily visited from here. Island Camp is located on remote Ol Kokwe Island, reached from the mainland by a 20 minute boat ride.
There are just over 20 tents, delicious food and is a perfect place to escape from it all and unwind. En-suite tented rooms are tucked under shady trees, the grounds have tendered lawns and gardens. There is a swimming pool set at the peak of the camp with fantastic views across the lake. A separate dining and bar area is always available for use. Lake cruises and shore visits offer great birding and hippo sightings. Village visits and to the nearby hot springs are also really interesting. There are also various water sports on offer.
The cry of the African Fish Eagle is never far away and boat trips on the lake often let you get close to these magnificent birds of prey as they swoop in to catch their prey. The lake itself is quite shallow at aroudn 6m but levels contiue to change. The other island which is accessible to tourists on the lake is Semation Island where you can find the indigenous population of Il Chamus pastoralist fishermen (Njemps). There is a small entry fee to visit their village and you can see fish being smoked, visit the doctor and school and learn about their way of life.
Day trips to Lake Bogoria from here are interesting with it's masses of flamingos, hot springs and interesting geology.
