Il Moran

Governors’ Il Moran Camp is situated on steep cliffs along the meandering Mara River at the heart of one of the most game rich areas of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The area surrounding Il Moran provides a home for the herds of migrating zebra and wildebeest as well as supporting substantial herds of elephants, hippos and buffalos. The nearby plains are the classical image of savannah Africa, dotted with acacia trees and fringed by the inspiring Siria escarpment. 
 
Il Moran Camp is small, consisting of just ten tents all shaded under thick trees. Each of the spacious tents has a very private location with superb views of the Mara River and is furnished luxuriously. Stunning beds are handmade from specially selected wood taken from ancient olive trees along with comfortable easy chairs and rugs and a selection of books and artwork. Large en-suite bathrooms have flush toilets, a lovely big shower with piping-hot water, and a Victorian bath where you can soap the day’s dust away.
 
Weather permitting, meals are served under the giant trees making candle-lit cordon bleu dinners a truly unforgettable experience. Alternatively each tent has an extended veranda designed so you can take dinner in private at your tent or just relax and enjoy the sights and sounds. Birds and butterflies abound, elephant wander through the camp, at night leopard call nearby. Such active wildlife make the MasaiaAskari (warden) guiding you back to the tent especially comforting. 
 
As at all the Governors’ camps, guests are provided with three game drives every day and being a stone’s throw away from the Mara River ensures that the action during the migration season (July-October) is a short game drive away.  The bushlands around Rhino Ridge are also good areas for spotting one of the Masai Mara’s 20 or so black rhinos. Not only are grazing animals particularly common in this area but big cat sightings are also particularly prevalent – the BBC’s Big Cat Diary is filmed in this area. 
 
Being such a small and intimate camp ensures Il Moran can provide a very personal service. However as part of the Governors’ camps guests can also benefit from a far wider range of facilities including balloon safaris on your doorstep along with having access to a range of Governors properties across Kenya - relaxing lakeside breaks on the shores of Lake Victoria or Lake Naivasha.
 
Fair Trade / Responsible Travel:
It is possible to visit the nearby Mararianta School, which has been completely rebuilt and developed with funds generated by Governors’ Camp and the BBC.  This establishment provides education for students who walk up to 10km through the bush each day.
