Known as the White City, Udaipur is an enchantingly beautiful city, with its white marble palaces reflected in the blue waters of Lake Pichola and surrounding by the green Aravalli hills of Southern Rajasthan.
The city has many fine havelis and palaces and temples. The City Palace sprawling along the shores of Lake Pichola is the biggest palace in Rajasthan and famous for its fine workmanship. To get the best views of the palace, you can take a boat tour on Lake Pichola at sunset. There are two good hotels located within the complex, just a short distance from the residance of the Maharana of Udaipur, and it is also possible to stay in the Lake Palace in the middle of the lake. The old town surrounding the palace is full of facinating havelis and beautifully sculpted temples as well as many great shops.
Other sites in Udaipur include Gulab Bagh, a rose garden situated in Sajjan Niwas Park, the island palace of Jag Mandir. in the middle of Lake Pichola, the well-preserved 10th century temple of Ambika Mata and the Indo-Aryan temple of Jagannath Rai.
